competition in collaboration w/ SOM

as one of the last large scale urban plots on manhattan island remaining vacant, the hudson yards span three blocks north-south between w30th & w33rd streets and east-west between 9th ave & 12th ave and are owned and run by port authority and the mta as terminal train-waggon storage and rail-range. this function is to be preserved despite its development above resting on an enormous concrete slab-platform of the above expanse which will serve as planting ground for an entirely new neighborhood bridging the gap between northern chelsea and southern hell’s kitchen of a programmatic urban mix of office space, residential, retail, cultural and educational as well as recreational and green spaces and parks.

partnering with brookfield properties developers diller scofidio + renfro, as part of a larger team of architects headed by skidmore owings & merrill was asked to contribute the design of a residential tower with additional educational and recreational program at the north-western extent of the lot directly on the west-side highway lining the river’s waterfront.

the urban scheme twin tower proposal was chosen and tweaked formally in order to accomodate certain programmatic requirements and performative aspects of the building’s sustainable functioning. terminating the highline park - equally designed by ds+r - in the base of the building, sporting a court-yard typology accomodating a school as well as a museum while opening to the urban mineral plaza facing the river, the two residential towers soar up above the vast roof-garden overlooking the hudson as a publicly accessible feauture of the building, slightly tilting towards the river and the plaza in order to gain more facade surface for better views of manhattan and proper light and air exposure for the apartments. at an intermediate height the twins are connected by a daringly suspended panoramic glass loop housing the running track of the gym health club and spa programs located at that level which includes a pool cantilevering off of the western facade towards the water.

the glazen skin of the building is seconed by an additional exterior layer of wooden louvers that allow each tenant or apartment owner to regulate light-influx into their floor-to-ceiling glazed apartments individually, resulting in a varying pixelized aspect of the urban icon created.
